Situated between the Corbiere Mountains and the Mediterranean sea. Fitou dates back to Roman times and is now famous for its vineyards and is the oldest appeliation in Langquedoc. There are numerous wine caves situated in the village and surrounding area all of which offer wine tasting.
The village has excellent restaurants and a bar. Public tennis courts in the village, along with a football field and petanque pitch.
Chateau de Fitou (medieval museum) nearby with tapas bar open till midnight.
This stretch of the Mediterranean coast is renowned for its long, sandy beaches, the nearest of which is a short 10 minute drive and offers a variety of water sports, particularly windsurfing. Leucate and La Franqui are the nearest, but there are beaches stretching all the way to the Spanish border.
Fitou is well placed for exploring the region of Languedoc Roussillon. The Pyrenees mountains are just 1 hr and the Spanish border 45 mins. Perthus and Jonquera are two 'tax free' towns on the Spanish borders where you can buy many goods at reduced prices. Perfumes, food, leather goods and alcohol priced competitively. Jonquera in particular has many 'all you can eat' restaurants.
Nearby cities include Perpignan (Catalan capital) and Narbonne, further east along the Mediterranean are Beziers and Montpelier.
If you are interested in the Cathar Trail then Carcassonne (medieval city) is a must along with the numerous cathar fortresses such as Perpetreuse and Queribus to name but a few.
Or why not take a trip up into the Pyrenees on Le petit jaune Train (The Yellow Train) and admire the stunning views. You can pick up the train just outside the magnificent town of Villefranch de Confluent, another beautiful town and a must visit. It is one of the 'Le plus beaux village de France'.
The beautiful town of Collioure is about 30 mins away and is famous for artists, cafes and restaurants.
There is something for everyone in this region, be it exploring the Corbiere mountains, climbing the highest peak in the French Pyrenees (the Canigou), medieval castles, fortresses, water sports, cycling, walking, or lazing out on the many Mediterranean beaches or just chilling out by the pool.
